William Kentridge

  1. the methodical heartbeat to Kentridge's work is startling, there's an unapologetic bleakness to it that is unnerving for me. when I watched this at lacma a few years back, I couldn't shake the internal desolation for at least a day. It's sometimes not the most comfortable feeling to tap into, but when I directed Fando and Lis, I was able to "go there"... I used his images to help the actors anchor themselves in something that seems to be "abstract" to us Americans... desolation; yet to the rest of the world, is reality. With a lazy or selfish thought, we destroy a life half a world a way and cannot see the destruction from within. We have been entangled with our fellow man since the beginning of everything, and so are connected behind the veils of the physical world. And so in the act of dehumanizing others, we begin the process of our own dehumanization...
